WOW right?! This is why what we put in it counts and what we aren’t also counts. I don’t advocate pill probiotics for this very reason ( ok, one of the many) as it totally bypasses the oral microbiome.
This is a big deal because well, we swallow about 50 times per minute! So think… everything we swallow.. is going into our digestive system and bloodstream.
Having an imbalanced oral microbiome is linked to health concerns such as gum disease, rheumatoid arthritis and more.
So, what can you do to maintain a healthy oral microbiome and or even regain it, besides brushing and flossing? Here are a few tips:
- stick to water and ease up on the soda intake, sugary snacks and acidic drinks
- eat more natural fruits and vegetables
- add in daily real kefir - no, not from the store
Kefir is the most diverse of strains and being it is liquid/liquid form it will address your oral microbiome by repopulating the good bacteria. It’s a win - win really and one of the reasons I advocate it, offer it and use it daily- my kids too!
The kefir found in the stores is typically not traditionally made with kefir grains making it not as diverse plus it has additives/thickeners/sugar.
